Ever get a new plastic water bottle and the first time you used it the water had that icky, plasticky smell and taste to it. Unfortunately, that’s a common occurrence, but it’s nothing really to get too worked up about.
The good news is that the plastic taste will gradually disappear the more you use the water bottle. Usually within a couple of weeks use, the bottle will be worn in enough to lose that off-putting flavor.
The reason the water taste that ways because it is because it is absorbing the odor of the plastic itself. New plastic has a fairly strong odor to it, and water is very absorbent of any type ambient smells. Water kept in a garage will absorb the smell of gasoline and motor oil, for example.
Some water bottles are worse than others, and it depends on the type of plastic in the manufacturing process that is used when making the bottle. Generally, the more expensive bottles that use high quality plastics have less the smell and cause less of a bad taste in the water.
Tupperware containers made out of plastic have the same problem. You just have to use the product enough times until the offending odor dissipates and becomes unnoticeable.
Don’t worry that because the water tastes bad, it means that toxic chemicals have leeched into the water. It won’t make you sick to drink the water even though it has a little bit of a weird taste to it. Just put up with it until it goes away, or if it’s too much just return it to the place of purchase and get a different brand.
Keep in mind that this problem of course only applies to plastic water bottles. There are plenty of other types of water bottles that are less prone to this problem, such as stainless steel or aluminum.
But even those kinds of bottles sometimes have the same issue, making the water taste of metal when you first start using them. So, really it’s something that you just have to put up with, knowing that the problem will soon go away.
