The bombardier beetle’s wondrous defense mechanism begs the question of how it evolved such a unique biological structure so different from other beetles, and in fact all other insects.
Over the years, some believers in creationism have used the case of the bombardier beetle to try to prop up their theory. They usually assert that a creature could not possibly have evolved so completely differently from its biological cousins simply by natural evolutionary processes.
Usually, the claim is that the bombardier beetle is an impossible cog in the theory of evolution that proves it must be faulty theory. However, this assertion has been largely proven false by science.
The bodily chemicals used to create the intense reaction in the chamber of the bombardier beetle are naturally occurring in the body of every animal. Their presence in the body is not unique to the bombardier beetle.
What is unique is the way in which this insect has developed the ability to synthesize these chemicals in its own body without destroying itself, and further, to use the noxious mixture as a potent form of defense.
But that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t have evolved naturally over thousands of years, and it definitely doesn’t knock the theory of evolution. Not that this article or any other will convince a dedicated creationist of that fact, however.
The truth is that scientists do not understand completely how the bombardier beetle evolved. But that fact doesn’t prove or indicate that it couldn’t have evolved naturally or that it must be a sign of a higher power.
