Most plant-based food sources are quite heart healthy, and the avocado is definitely no exception. In fact, avocados are a superfood, and are considered one of the healthiest foods on the planet.
The main reason avocados are good for your heart is that they are packed with monounsaturated fats that are known to reduce HDL-cholesterol, a major contributor to heart disease.
85% of the calories in an avocado are made up of fat, with almost all of it being healthy monounsaturated fat. Do not mistakenly believe that because an avocado is high in fat that it is also bad for your heart.
It is true that certain types of fat increase levels of HDL cholesterol, which can lead to cardiovascular disease, but these “bad” fats are saturated fats which are mainly found in animal sources of food.
Fat is a vital component of our diet. But we must be conscientious to obtain our dietary fat requirements from healthy unsaturated fats such as avocados and olive oil rather than the saturated fats in meats and dairy.
In doing so, we ensure the optimal long-term health of our heart and cardiovascular system.
