Avocado has a very low carbohydrate level as it is composed of only about 4% carbohydrates when measured by caloric makeup. Most fruits have a much higher level of carbohydrates.
And that 4% is made up largely of insoluble fiber, which is not able to be processed by the digestive system and therefore passes through the bowels unabsorbed.
For this reason, avocado would not be considered a significant source of carbohydrate at all, and the small portion that it does have is almost all complex carbohydrates.
An avocado scores very low on the glycemic index, indicating that it is bereft of simple carbohydrates which cause spikes in blood sugar levels. So if you are a diabetic or are concerned about maintaining normal blood sugar, the avocado is a wonderful choice of fruit.
